Arrivals and Departures

When should my student arrive?
Participants should arrive between 8 and 8:30a.m. Staff are not available prior to 8 a.m., so we cannot be responsible for students dropped off before that time. Check in is located at Archery Playing Field in the NE corner of parking lot N-5, just east of Gate 2 at NE 45th and 17th Ave NE.

When should my student be picked up each day?
Pick up runs from 4:30 to 5 p.m. daily. Staff are not available after 5pm so it is very important that students are picked up on time. Students who are chronically picked up late may be asked to withdraw from the program before their session has ended.

What are my options for parking on campus while I pick up/drop off my child?
Before the start of the Summer Program you must download a parking permit (or several if you need). To find the permit for your child's specific course, visit the Commuter Services web page. (Parking permits for the 2009 program will not be available until late spring). Choose the camp that your child is registered for. Print the permit and place it on your dash. The permit includes information about where and when you can park. Please note that you will be ticketed for parking outside of the designated lot or time shown on the permit.

What should we do if we're running late?
A student that arrives after 8:30 a.m. should go directly to the class that is scheduled at the time of arrival.

How do I arrange for my student to leave early?
If your student needs to leave before 4:30 p.m., please send a note in advance notifying the Middle School Counselor. To pick up your student please go directly to their classroom. If the departure time falls outside of the parking permit time limits, you may need to purchase an additional parking permit at the University entrance gates. If your student needs to be picked up immediately due to an emergency, please call and alert the Middle School Counselor.

Attendance

What should I do if my student will be absent from the program?
For your student's safety and security, we ask to be notified if he/she will miss a day of the program. Please contact the Middle School Counselor through his/her cell phone, so we can update Middle School Academy staff as needed.

Can I receive a partial or full refund for any absences?
There is no refund available for days or weeks that students do not attend Middle School Academy.

If my student cannot attend on a given day, can we select a guest to take his/her place for that day?
Due to safety and liability issues, Middle School Academy is reserved for registered participants only. No guests or substitutes may attend.

Safety and Discipline

Are the staff CPR/First Aid certified?
Middle School Counselors are required to have current CPR/First Aid certification to work in Middle School Academy programs.

What happens in an emergency?
Emergency procedures are outlined in the "Middle School Academy Emergency/Safety Plan" document which will be sent in the late spring. The Middle School Counselor's cell phone number will also be provided to you on a small card for easy reference.

How do you handle medications?
In general, our staff members cannot administer medications, including suntan lotions and non-prescription pain relievers, to participants. However, our staff is trained on the use of the Epipen. Please make arrangements for your child to bring his/her medication with him/her to camp and share as much helpful information as you can on the Risk and Consent Form.

How are discipline issues handled?
Minor offenses will be handled on the spot. Interventions may include verbal reminders, mediated discussion, or a time out, etc. Repeated minor offenses will result in more formal disciplinary intervention, including a contact or conference with a parent or guardian. Major or repeat offences will always result in parent contact. Consequences may include short suspension or dismissal from the program. Examples of major offences include: physical endangerment of others, damage or stealing of property, possession of dangerous or illegal objects or substances (e.g., drugs, alcohol, tobacco substances, weapons). Please note that such behaviors will result in immediate parent/guardian contact and if necessary an emergency removal. Should a student be removed from the program for any of these reasons, no tuition will be refunded.

How do you accommodate disabilities?
The University of Washington is committed to providing access, equal opportunity and reasonable accommodation in its services, programs, activities, education and employment for individuals with disabilities. To request disability accommodation, contact UW Educational Outreach at 206-543-2320, or the Disability Services Office at 206-543-6450 (voice), 206-543-6452 (TTY), 206-685-7264 (fax) or dso@u.washington.edu (e-mail) at least 10 days in advance of applying.
