Summer Youth Program Instructors
Contract Position (Temporary)
June 23 - August 15, 2008. This is a temporary, professional position, and salary starts at $19.25/hour.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Summer Day, Middle and High School Instructors are responsible for coordinating informative, interesting and fun courses in specialized subjects or fields. Courses should appeal to the specified grade level. Instructors must be an advanced student, educator, or professional in a selected field.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Creating detailed lesson plans per schedule
  • Attending staff orientation and weekly meetings
  • Instructing classes per assignment
  • Creating a classroom environment conducive to cooperative and hands-on learning
  • Being conservative with supplies and limiting additional supply requests to necessary items
  • Making classroom activities appropriate to student age level
  • Planning activities for Parent Open House
  • Providing individualized instruction where appropriate and allowing for independent or self-paced study when necessary
  • Notifying the camp administrative staff of problems and make recommendations to improve the campers experience
  • Carrying out other duties that the Camp Director and Program Coordinators assign

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in Education, related-field (Masters preferred)
  • Teaching credentials, or equivalent teaching experience with 6-18 year olds
  • Effective classroom management experience
  • Experience developing and implementing innovative curricula in your area(s) of expertise
  • (Desired -not required) CPR/First Aid certified by June 2008 (training available through UWEO)

Campus Coordinator - UW Summer Day Program
Contract Position (Temporary)
June 23 - August 15, 2008. This is a temporary, professional position, and salary starts at $17.00/hour.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Work on-campus with the UW's summer enrichment program for youth in grades 1-5. Campus Coordinator serves as the face of the program to children, parents and visitors. Working in conjunction with the UWEO Program Manager, the Campus Coordinator maintains the daily operation of the Summer Day Program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervision of the Campus Coordinator Assistant, Summer Day Program counselors and Recreation Lead Counselor
  • Providing feedback into the hiring and ongoing evaluation of counselors
  • Conducting/participating in training sessions and staff meetings
  • Facilitating daily communications between program participants, counselors and instructional staff, program administration, volunteers and parents
  • Supervising the checking in and out process each day
  • Overseeing student discipline as needed
  • Making recommendations regarding the purchase of supplies and other materials as needed
  • Supervising the daily clean up and storing of materials

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicant should demonstrate previous experience working with children in groups, effectively managing staff of 10-12; ability to deal firmly and fairly with issues that arise. BA in related field required, MA preferred. Teaching Certificate a plus. Background in education, physical education or outdoor leadership is preferred. Must be CPR/First Aid certified by June 2008. Assistant to the Campus Coordinator for UW Summer Youth Programs
Hourly Staff (Temporary)
June 16 - August 20, 2008 (approx. dates). Salary is based upon experience starts at $14.00/hour.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Work on-campus with the UW's summer enrichment program for youth in grades 1-5. The Assistant to the Campus Coordinator provides essential support to the Program Director and Campus Coordinator. This individual may serve as one of the primary points of contact to instructors, parents and visitors. Working in conjunction with the UWEO Program Manager and the Campus Coordinator, the Assistant to the CC helps maintain the daily operation of the Summer Day Program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitating daily communications between counselors and instructional staff, program administration, volunteers and parents
  • As needed, help to manage the check in and out process each day
  • Serve as liaison to program administration (offices are based 3-4 blocks west of campus). May require visits to the office to pickup and deliver supplies, regular check in with Youth Programs Coordinator, etc.
  • Serving as back-up counselor in the temporary event of staff shortage (See counselor job description)
  • Assist Campus Coordinator in supervision of any volunteers and interns
  • Participate in all training sessions and regular staff meetings
  • Assist instructors (as needed and appropriate) in special classroom activities or fieldtrips
  • As needed and appropriate, supervise and participate in outdoor and rainy day play
  • As needed and appropriate, assist in the supervision of swimming pool activities
  • Notify the program administrative staff of any and all problems and make recommendations to improve the camper experience
  • As needed, assist in the daily set up and break down of camp
  • Carry out all duties that the Program Director and the Campus Coordinator assign

QUALIFICATIONS:
Idea applicant should demonstrate previous experience working with children in a camp setting, ability to multi-task, work quickly and effectively under pressure, and ability to deal firmly and fairly with issues that arise.

Recreational Lead Counselor for UW Summer Day Program
Hourly Staff (Temporary)
June 16 - August 20, 2008 (approx. dates). Salary is based upon experience starts at $14.00/hour.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Work on-campus with the UW's summer enrichment program for youth in grades 1-5. The Recreational Lead Counselor works under the supervision of the Campus Coordinator and is primarily responsible for planning and conducting outdoor play during the less structured program hours, e.g., before and after care hours and for students who do not participate in daily swimming activities. When not organizing games, sports, and activities, this person performs the duties of other counselors, including: accompanying groups of children around campus and interacting with parents, staff, and teachers.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Planning and conducting outdoor play for:
    • extended and after care hours
    • for students who do not participate in daily swimming activities
    • for rainy day indoor play days
  • As needed, facilitate daily communications between counselors and instructional staff, program administration, volunteers and parents
  • As needed, help manage the daily check in and out process
  • Assist with student discipline as needed
  • Make recommendations regarding the purchase of recreational supplies
  • Assist in the daily clean up and storing of materials
  • When not organizing games, sports, and activities, this person performs the duties of other counselors, including: accompanying groups of children around campus and interacting with parents, staff, and teachers

Applicants should demonstrate previous experience working with children in groups, ability to think about and plan creative group activities for students during less/unstructured hours of the program. Ability to deal firmly and fairly with issues that arise.

Summer Youth Program Counselor
Hourly Staff (Temporary)
June 23 - August 15, 2008. Hourly wage starts at $10.00.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Work on-campus with the UW's summer enrichment program for youth. The elementary-level program is for children entering grades 1-5. The middle school program is for students entering grades 6-8. Counselors are our front line and direct link to campers. They are responsible for the daily supervision of children in their assigned group and are to participate in the daily camp activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attending mandatory staff orientation (scheduled approximately one week prior to the start of camp.)
  • Provide direct supervision and care of groups of children (maximum size is 18) in different locations on the University campus
  • Assist in checking campers in and out of extended care
  • Assist instructors and participate in art, science, drama, and creative writing classes
  • Supervise and participate in outdoor play and rainy day indoor play and the lunch periods
  • Assist in the supervision of swimming pool activities, and swim with students in the pool daily
  • Notify the camp administrative staff of any and all problems and make recommendations to improve the camper experience
  • Assist in the set up and break down of camp each day
  • Foster a sense of community within the group and seek ways to include all campers in activities
  • Carry out all duties that the Camp Director and the Program Coordinators assign

QUALIFICATIONS:
The primary responsibility of a counselor is the safety and well being of the campers. A counselor should show initiative and support each camper so they can have the best experience possible. Applicants should have previous experience working with children in groups, demonstrate the ability to enforce discipline firmly and fairly, and be able to handle children with differing abilities, motivational levels, and learning styles. Applicants should have a repertoire of games and activities children will enjoy.

All counselors must be CPR/First Aid certified by June 2008. (UW Educational Outreach will be providing a CPR/First Aid training opportunity). Applicants who have water safety and instruction certificates are a plus. Hourly wage starts at $10.00. Interviewing begins in February and continues until positions are filled
